This is a really good example of how the default assumption of putting everything in euclidean ℝⁿ is silly. It’s obvious that when people say they’re praying “in the direction of Mecca”, they’re referring to the surface of a sphere with orthodromic distance, not the entirety of 3-space with euclidean distance. This is a very useful geometry to use when you’re referring to something affected by earth’s gravity to the point where it will stay approximately within a spherical shell, such as a sailing ship, or someone walking along land. Should that apply to prayers? Are prayers affected by gravity? I don’t know.
